Graduating from the University of Otago in 1992 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB)
A/Prof Michael Talbot completed his internship in Wellington, New Zealand. He relocated to Sydney, where he commenced residency and undertook specialist surgical training at St Vincent’s Hospital.
2001
Awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS)
He was awarded FRACS, having completed the rigorous Advanced Surgical Training program within the Sydney South Eastern rotation.

Lister Lecturer in Surgery
Following this, he pursued further subspecialty training in the UK, where he was appointed Lister Lecturer in Surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, providing advanced clinical and academic experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery.
2003
Consultant Practice & Senior Lecturer in Surgery at UNSW
Upon returning to Sydney in 2003, A/Prof Talbot commenced consultant practice at both St George and Wollongong Hospitals and was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at UNSW.

He trains undergraduate medical students, surgical registrars, and fellows at both UNSW and St George Hospital, and also contributes to postgraduate education through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Specialties
Throughout his career, A/Prof Michael Talbot has been a leading pioneer of complex bariatric surgery in New South Wales, maintaining the highest caseload of bariatric patients in the state for over two decades. He also performed Australasia’s first robotic bariatric and oesophageal surgical procedures, marking significant milestones in minimally invasive surgery.
A/Prof Talbot provides a comprehensive range of both endoscopic and surgical treatments for neoplasia affecting the oesophagus and stomach. He leads NSW’s longest-established high-resolution oesophageal diagnostic laboratory, offering advanced diagnostic services. Among a select group of Australian clinicians, he specialises in innovative endoscopic therapies designed to treat early tumours and functional disorders of the oesophagus.
